When Apex Legends Becomes a Battle for National Pride
Until now, competitive Apex Legends has been built primarily around professional teams competing for the top spot. At the center of that ecosystem is the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS), the game's official esports circuit.
By contrast, the newly announced Esports Nations Cup (ENC) introduces a different competitive framework. At its core is a national team format.
At ENC, players form national rosters and compete for their country or territory rather than their usual professional team.
This is more than a change in tournament format. It could reshape how competitive Apex Legends is viewed.
Apex Legends has been confirmed as one of the titles at ENC 2026, where national teams will compete in Riyadh in November.
By adding national team competition to an esports scene traditionally built around professional organizations, Apex Legends is entering a new stage.

The Esports Nations Cup (ENC) is an international esports tournament held in a national team format. Instead of competing as professional teams, players are selected to represent their respective countries and participate as national squads.
ENC is a multi-title international esports tournament scheduled to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Apex Legends is one of the games included in the inaugural event.
The Apex Legends competition will run from November 26 to 29, 2026, featuring 40 teams—one from each of 40 countries and territories. Twenty countries and territories will receive Guaranteed Representation based on ALGS Year 6 Championship Points, 18 will qualify through regional Online Qualifiers, and the final two slots will be awarded through Wildcards.
Guaranteed Representation secures a place for a country or territory, not for a specific roster. The national roster that takes that place will still be determined through the Online Qualifiers.
ENC differs from traditional professional team tournaments by placing national representation at the center of the competition. Bringing together teams from across the world will highlight not only individual performance, but also differences in regional strength and playstyle.

Clear regional playstyle differences
Regional tendencies—such as aggressive play or a more measured, placement-focused approach—are often visible in matches, making Apex Legends well suited to a national team format.
Taken together, these factors show that Apex Legends already had the global reach, established competitive ecosystem, and spectator appeal needed for ENC.

The Esports Nations Cup (ENC) is an international, multi-title esports tournament built around national team competition. The inaugural event will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in November 2026.
ENC brings together players representing their countries and territories, creating a competitive structure distinct from traditional professional team tournaments.

Apex Legends Tournament Overview
The tournament overview for the "Apex Legends" division is as follows.

This structure makes the Apex Legends competition a showcase for a new form of national team esports. One of the biggest questions is what kind of national rosters will emerge.
Qualification and Team Composition (Apex Legends)
In the “Apex Legends” division, a total of 40 teams—one from each of 40 countries and territories—will compete in the main tournament. ENC has established its own unique rules regarding how qualifying spots are determined and how representative teams are formed.
■ Breakdown of ENC Finals Slots
- 20 countries and territories: Guaranteed Representation based on ALGS Year 6 Championship Points
- 18 countries and territories: Qualification through regional Online Qualifiers
- 2 slots: Wildcards
The 18 additional qualifier slots are allocated as follows: nine for EMEA, six for the Americas, and three for APAC South. APAC North receives no additional slots for non-guaranteed countries or territories.
This is because Japan and South Korea have already been confirmed for Guaranteed Representation through the ENC Ranking based on ALGS Year 6 Championship Points. The APAC North Online Qualifier will still be held, but solely to determine which rosters will represent Japan and South Korea at the ENC Finals.
■ How National Rosters Are Decided and Formed
For each country or territory with Guaranteed Representation, the highest-finishing eligible roster from that country or territory in its regional Online Qualifier will qualify for the ENC Finals.
Each team must consist of three or four eligible players representing the same country or territory and may also register one non-playing coach.
A roster may include no more than two players from the same ALGS Year 6 Split 1 Pro League roster. Existing professional teams therefore cannot enter unchanged; national teams must combine players from different rosters.
■ Online Qualifier Format
The Online Qualifiers will be held across four regions: APAC North, APAC South, EMEA, and the Americas. Each regional qualifier can include up to 1,280 teams and will use a single-elimination structure of up to seven rounds. Early rounds will feature four matches per series, while the Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals will feature six. The top 10 teams in each lobby will advance after every round.
The qualifiers will use standard ALGS scoring, awarding points for both placement and eliminations. The ALGS Legend Ban system will apply throughout, with POI Drafts held before the Semifinals and Finals.
New Highlights of National Team Competition
At the Esports Nations Cup, Apex Legends can be viewed from a different perspective than in traditional professional team competition.
The main highlights of the competition can be summarized in the following three points.
- Dream-team lineups featuring top players from different organizations
- A clear nation-versus-nation format
- New team dynamics and strategies
First, the national team lineups.
Because no roster may include more than two players from the same ALGS Pro League team, national rosters will bring together players who normally compete for different organizations. This creates combinations rarely seen in regular tournaments.
One of ENC's biggest attractions is the possibility of seeing top players from different teams unite in what feels like a “dream team.”
Second, a more intuitive competition structure.
National team competition gives viewers an immediate reason to choose who to support. While traditional Apex tournaments center on professional organizations and individual players, ENC adds the familiar perspective of cheering for a country or territory.
Third, new team dynamics and match strategies.
National rosters will not simply reproduce existing professional teams. Players from different organizations will need to build new coordination, roles, and strategies.
How quickly each roster develops chemistry will be one of the key storylines to watch.
ENC therefore offers a different way to experience competitive Apex Legends.
What About Team Japan?

Within the ENC's national team framework, Japan is listed as one of the countries with an official national team structure.
On the official Nations Setup page, Japan’s National Team Partner, National Team Manager, and supporting organizations are listed. However, this information reflects Japan’s operational structure for the ENC and does not by itself confirm either the national roster for the Apex Legends competition or qualification for the ENC Finals.
As of July 2026, Japan and South Korea have already been confirmed for Guaranteed Representation at the ENC Finals. However, Japan's Apex Legends national roster has not yet been determined.
Registration closes on July 26. The full list of all 20 countries and territories receiving Guaranteed Representation is expected to be published between the registration deadline and the start of the qualifiers. The rosters that will represent each country or territory will then be decided through the regional Online Qualifiers from August 1 to 3.

*The official ENC website lists these nine organizations under “Supported by NESTA.” They are not the participating teams in the Apex Legends competition. No detailed information has yet been released about each organization's role or involvement in selecting Japan's national roster.
Japan's Apex Legends roster will therefore be formed separately from any existing professional team. Which players are selected—and how they come together as a team—will be one of the most closely watched developments.
ALGS vs. ENC: Club Teams and National Teams
Apex Legends at the Esports Nations Cup (ENC) uses a different competitive structure from the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS), which sits at the center of professional Apex esports.

ALGS rewards professional teams that refine their coordination over long periods. By continuing with the same core roster, teams can develop increasingly sophisticated roles and strategies.

The structure of the competition also changes.
While ALGS focuses primarily on team-based competition, ENC presents a clear “nation-versus-nation” format, changing how the matches are viewed. Questions such as which country will win and which region is strongest add a new layer to how the competitive scene is understood.
In this way, ENC presents Apex Legends through a national team context distinct from traditional professional team competition.
Where Is Apex Legends Headed?
Apex Legends' inclusion in ENC signals a shift in how the game is positioned as an esport. Until now, its competitive scene has been built primarily around the professional team ecosystem of the ALGS.
On the other hand, the ENC introduces a national team-based competitive format, adding a new dimension to the competitive scene. In addition to traditional tournaments that focus on team cohesion and performance, the introduction of country-based representation brings a new narrative, potentially changing how Apex Legends itself is perceived.
The national team format may also provide an accessible entry point for people who have not previously followed competitive Apex Legends. By making the stakes easy to understand, it could broaden the game's audience and help create a new culture of spectatorship.
ENC is more than simply another tournament. It could mark a turning point in the evolution of Apex Legends as an esport, depending on how the event and its national team format develop.
