By contrast, the newly announced Esports Nations Cup (ENC) introduces a different competitive framework. At its core is a national team format.
At ENC, players form national rosters and compete for their country or territory rather than their usual professional team.
This is more than a change in tournament format. It could reshape how competitive Apex Legends is viewed.
Apex Legends has been confirmed as one of the competitive titles for ENC, with national teams set to compete against one another. The inaugural tournament was originally scheduled for November 2026, but on August 18, 2026, it was postponed to November 2027.

The Esports Nations Cup (ENC) is an international esports tournament held in a national team format. Instead of competing as professional teams, players are selected to represent their respective countries and participate as national squads.
ENC is a multi-title international esports tournament scheduled to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Apex Legends is one of the games included in the inaugural event.
In the “Apex Legends” division, it had been announced that a total of 40 teams—one from each of 40 countries and regions—would compete in the 2026 tournament prior to its postponement. The breakdown of main event slots was as follows: 20 countries and regions with guaranteed spots based on ALGS Year 6 Championship Points, 18 countries and regions advancing from regional online qualifiers, and two wildcard slots.
National team rosters were determined through online qualifiers, and as of August 4, 2026, 39 of the 40 spots had been filled. However, it has not yet been announced whether these spots or the national team rosters will carry over to the 2027 tournament.

Prior to the postponement, the 2026 Apex Legends competition was set to introduce a new national team format.
The regional online qualifiers were held from August 1 to 3, 2026, and on August 4, the national rosters for the 20 countries and regions eligible for Guaranteed Representation, the 18 teams that advanced from the regional qualifiers, and Saudi Arabia, which secured the Host Region Wildcard, were officially announced. As a result, 39 of the 40 slots for the 2026 tournament had been confirmed.
However, it has not yet been announced whether these 39 teams and their national rosters will carry over unchanged to the 2027 tournament.
Competition Format and Team Composition [Prior to Postponement · For the 2026 Tournament]
The following are the competition format and team composition rules for the “Apex Legends” division that were announced prior to the postponement for the 2026 tournament. It has not yet been announced whether the same rules will be adopted for the 2027 tournament.
■ Breakdown of ENC Finals Slots
- 20 countries and territories: Guaranteed Representation based on ALGS Year 6 Championship Points
- 18 countries and territories: Qualification through regional Online Qualifiers
- 2 slots: Wildcards
The 18 spots available through the regional online qualifiers were allocated as follows: 9 for EMEA, 6 for the Americas, and 3 for APAC South. No additional spots were set aside for APAC North to allow new countries or regions to advance to the main tournament.
This was because Japan and South Korea had already been guaranteed main event slots through the ENC rankings based on ALGS Year 6 Championship Points. The APAC North Qualifiers, held in August 2026, did not award additional country or region slots; instead, they determined which rosters would represent Japan and South Korea.
■ How National Rosters Are Decided and Formed
Even for the 20 countries and regions guaranteed a place in the main event, the national roster was not selected automatically. During the regional online qualifiers, the highest-finishing eligible roster from each country or region earned the right to represent it at the 2026 tournament.
The rules stipulated that each team must consist of 3 to 4 players representing the same country or region, and that one non-player coach could be registered.
In addition, the number of players that could be selected from the same ALGS Year 6 Split 1 Pro League roster was limited to a maximum of two. As a result, existing pro teams could not compete as-is, and it was necessary to form rosters by combining players from multiple teams.
■ Online Qualifier Format
The online qualifiers were held in four regions: APAC North, APAC South, EMEA, and the Americas. Each region allowed for up to 1,280 teams to participate, using a single-elimination format with up to seven rounds. The early rounds consisted of four matches per series, while the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals consisted of six matches; the top 10 teams from each lobby advanced to the next round.
In the preliminary rounds, just as in ALGS, a point system based on ranking and kills was used; in addition, the Legend Ban was introduced, and a POI draft was held before the semifinals and finals.

Under the rules for the 2026 tournament prior to its postponement, there was a limit on the number of players that could be selected from the same ALGS team, so the system was designed to form the national team by selecting players from different teams. On August 4, 2026, 4rufa, Mike, and Axis were officially announced as Japan’s national roster for the Apex Legends competition.
The three players competed in the APAC North online qualifiers as “REJECT DIVISION,” a mixed roster consisting of 4rufa and Axis from REJECT, and Mike from ZETA DIVISION. They finished in second place in the finals—the highest-ranked Japanese team—and secured a spot to represent Japan.
